Help Using SoftSource Plug-Ins

This document provides overviews and step-by-step procedures for using the SoftSource DWG/DXF and SVF plug-ins to view CAD drawings and other graphics from within Netscape or Internet Explorer.

You can find some answers among our Frequently Asked Questions.

Note: For Help on embedding graphics in your HTML documents and hyperlinks, see HTML Syntax for Vector Graphics.

Getting Started

If you've already downloaded and installed the DWG/DXF and SVF plug-in, for any HTML document that contains an image in these formats, Netscape or Internet Explorer should automatically use the appropriate plug-in to display the image. The brief sample/test documents for both plug-ins step you through basic procedures. Refer back to this Help document if you need more detailed information on a given procedure.

The Plug-in Pop-up Menu

You use the same pop-up menu to control options in either plug-in. As noted above, the SVF plug-in has additional HTML hyperlink functionality (explained later in this document).

Displaying the Pop-up Menu

To display the pop-up menu:
  1. Move the mouse pointer directly over the DWG, DXF, or SVF image.
  2. Click the right mouse button.
This displays the pop-up menu shown below. For detailed, step-by-step procedures for menu options, see the sections following this brief overview.

Manipulating the View

The pop-up menu includes various options for zooming in (magnifying) and zooming out (de-magnifying) on the view and for panning around the image in any direction.

Zooming In or Out on an Image

The simple Zoom In/Zoom Out commands each use the center of the current view of the drawing as the reference point for the zoom operation. Each zoom in/zoom out magnifies/de-magnifies the view by a factor of two.

To zoom in on an image:

  1. With the mouse pointer directly over the image, click the right mouse button to display the pop-up menu.
  2. Click Zoom In.

To zoom out on an image:

  1. With the mouse pointer directly over the image, click the right mouse button to display the pop-up menu.
  2. Click Zoom Out.

Zooming In on a Specific Area of an Image

To zoom in on a specific area of an image:
  1. With the mouse pointer directly over the image, click the right mouse button to display the pop-up menu.
  2. Click Zoom Window.
The status bar prompts you to pick the first point of a magnifying window that defines the area of the image you want to examine more closely.
  3. Click the point on the image that you want as the first corner of the magnifying window.
The status bar prompts you to pick the second point for the window. A "ghosted" outline of the window "rubberbands" (adjusts dynamically) as you move the mouse.
  4. Drag the ghosted window until it contains the area of the drawing you want examine, and then click to set the second corner of the window.

Zooming to the Extents of an Image

When you zoom to the extents of a drawing, the image is shown full-view and scaled as large as possible within the drawing area, as defined by the extents of the original drawing.

Note: The extents of a DWG, DXF, or SVF image is defined and saved as part of the file in the original CAD or drawing program and cannot be changed with the plug-ins.

To zoom to the extents of an image:

  1. With the mouse pointer directly over the image, click the right mouse button to display the pop-up menu.
  2. Click Zoom Extents.

Panning an Image

You can shift or "slide" the area of the drawing displayed and move horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, based on two displacement points you specify for distance and direction.

To pan an image:

  1. With the mouse pointer directly over the image, click the right mouse button to display the pop-up menu.
  2. Click Pan.
The status bar prompts you to pick the first displacement point.
  3. Click the point on the image that you want as the first displacement point.
The status bar prompts you to pick the second displacement point. A "ghosted" displacement line "rubberbands" (adjusts dynamically) as you move the mouse.
  4. Drag the ghosted displacement line the distance and direction you want, and then click to set the second displacement point.

Note: Select the second displacement point in the direction you want the drawing to slide. For example, to slide the drawing left, click the desired distance to the left of the first displacement point. To slide the drawing up, click the desired distance above the first displacement point.

Working in 3D

Holding the shift key down and using the arrow keys will rotate the image in 3D. When the drawing is first displayed it is either to the 2D extents or the 3D view that was in effect when the drawing was last viewed.

Working with Layers

Many of the most complex types of drawings use layers to logically group related objects in an image. This is a standard approach for organizing complexity within CAD drawings. For example, the walls of a building plan might be drafted on a separate layer from the flooring structure.

Hiding/Displaying a Layer

Both the DWG/DXF plug-in and SVF plug-in allow you to display and hide existing layers in drawings of the corresponding file formats. When you turn the display on or off for a layer, all objects on that layer are also turned on or off. In this way, you can focus on just the information you're interested in.

To hide one or more layers:

  1. With the mouse pointer directly over the image, click the right mouse button to display the pop-up menu.
  2. Click Layers to display the Layers dialog box.
Note: An asterisk (*) preceding the layer name in the dialog box indicates that the layer is currently visible. Layers without the asterisk are currently hidden.
  3. Select the layer you want to hide.
  4. Click the Display check box to turn it off.
  5. Click Apply if you want to hide additional layers.
Or, click OK to close the dialog box.
  6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for each layer you want to hide.
Shortcuts
The Layers dialog box is modeless, so you can keep it displayed on the screen while you work with a drawing. When the dialog box is open, you can use these shortcuts:

To redisplay one or more hidden layers:

  1. If necessary, open the Layers dialog box with the pop-up menu.
  2. Select the layer or layers you want to redisplay.
  3. Click the Display check box to turn it on.
  4. Click Apply or OK.

Working with Hyperlinks (SVF Plug-in Only)

With the SVF Plug-in, you can tap the the additional power and richness of hyperlinked information that you can include in SVF files. HTML hyperlinks have the following characteristics:
